What is Restylane?

RESTYLANE® is a dermal filler used for mid-to-deep injections for moderate to severe wrinkles, nasolabial folds, and lip and cheek augmentation. The filler is composed of biodegradable, non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid (NASHA), a natural substance found in the body that provides volume and fullness to the skin.

RESTYLANE® is formulated with a unique cross-linking gel made with XpresHAn Technology to maintain the patient’s natural expressions. Results are evident immediately following the procedure. As with any dermal filler, most patients need a follow-up treatment 5-9 months after the initial treatment since the injectable gel is eventually absorbed by natural body processes.

The RESTYLANE® family of fillers includes Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Silk, and Restylane Lyft. Restylane-L is the same substance but with lidocaine added as an anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the injections.

Restylane

RESTYLANE® helps fight moderate to severe wrinkles in the face, particularly the nasolabial folds, which are the lines from the corner of your nose to each corner of the mouth. The filler is injected beneath the skin to restore fullness to facial wrinkles, revealing a more youthful-looking appearance. Results last up to 18 months.

Restylane Refyne

RESTYLANE® Refyne softens smile lines by helping the skin surrounding the mouth maintain its normal movement despite the aging process. As the skin surrounding the mouth loses its natural elasticity over the years, nasolabial folds and marionette lines become more noticeable. Restylane Refyne corrects these lines without distorting your natural look. This HA dermal filler helps you maintain your natural expressions, so you always look like you. Results last up to 12 months.

Restylane Defyne

Define your signature expression by maintaining the natural facial movement of your smile, frown, and pucker. RESTYLANE® Defyne smooths deep laugh lines and leaves a smoother, more youthful appearance. This hyaluronic acid dermal filler has been FDA-approved to treat nasolabial folds and marionette lines, and has received high satisfaction rates. Results last up to 12 months.

Restylane Silk

Attain the perfect smile with RESTYLANE® Silk, an injectable filler that volumizes the lips for a full, plump look. RESTYLANE® Silk has a different molecular makeup than other Restylane products, with smoother, finer particles of hydraulic acid, ideal for detailed, delicate areas. Results last about 6 months.

Restylane Lyft

Get the desired definition to your smile with cheek augmentation. RESTYLANE® Lyft corrects age-related volume loss in the cheeks and the area surrounding the mouth. This injectable hyaluronic acid gel corrects nasolabial folds for up to 6 months and adds volume to the surrounding cheek area for up to 12 months. It is also known to improved the shape of the cheek by smoothing unwanted wrinkles and creases. The end result is a more natural smile and youthful appearance.

What Can I Expect From a Restylane Treatment?

During the initial consultation, talk about your medical history so your provider can make sure you’re a candidate for Restylane dermal filler. Typically, the patient lays back comfortably during the procedure, which takes about an hour. Your healthcare provider cleans and prepares the target area. To help with the pain during the injections, we use topical numbing cream, lidocaine, ice, vibratory anesthesia (a vibrating device to distract patients during the treatment), and a steroid injection post treatment to reduce swelling. The Restylane gel may contain numbing agents as well. You may request additional pain medication if desired. The gel is injected with a pre-prepared syringe filled with the Restylane gel, then massaged into the targeted area. We gently ice the area afterward to lessen any swelling.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, warfarin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, or St. John’s Wort for 1 week before and after your treatment to decrease the risk of bruising. Restylane is not recommend for pregnant or breastfeeding women, those with extreme allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), anyone allergic to lidocaine or any components of hyaluronic acid, or someone with a bleeding disorder.

What Happens After the Injections? Aftercare Instructions

Apply ice to the treated area for a day or two after getting injected. Restylane treatments generally don’t require any downtime and potential side effects can be camouflaged with makeup. Avoid laser treatment, chemical peels, and UV lamps until any swelling or redness has cleared. Avoid direct sunlight as much as possible and apply chemical-free sunblock before leaving the house. We do not recommend Restylane injections if you are taking medication to suppress the immune system, as it can result it increased bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

Are There Any Side Effects to Restylane Injections?

Most reported side effects are mild in intensity and short-lived, resolving in 7-14 days. As with any injection, Restylane carries the risk of infection. At the injection site, some patients experience bruising, bleeding, redness, swelling, pain, soreness, tenderness, itching, headache, scabbing, and hardness (nodule). Restylane may cause hyperpigmentation, especially in African-American patients. If side effects last more than 2 weeks, talk with your provider.
