The Weight Loss Center At Helendale

Experience a journey that will change your life

Weight Loss Rochester NY

The Helendale Weight Loss Center, supervised by Dr. Rachel Conley, offers a comprehensive weight loss program that will reinvent your lifestyle. Instead of using temporary “diets” that produce limited, often short-lived results, our program emphasizes a life change with lasting results. We help you establish a healthy body weight supported with proper eating habits and moderate exercises.

Board-certified in Internal and Bariatric Medicine, Dr. Conley offers medical supervision to each weight loss patient. A customized weight loss plan will be implemented based on the patient’s individual needs. Dr. Conley is committed to the lifelong success of her patients.

Why Weight Loss?

According to statistics from the CDC, almost 37% of adults in the US are obese and 33% are overweight, with the number of obese individuals surpassing the number of overweight individuals for the first time in history. Obesity affects or increases the risk of many diseases in patients, including Type 2 Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, asthma, some types of cancer, and infertility.

Weight loss can improve many existing health problems, including pulmonary disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver, gall bladder disease, gynecologic abnormalities, osteoarthritis, skin conditions, gout, phlebitis, various cancers, severe pancreatitis, coronary heart disease, cataracts, and idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

Since obesity can affect moods, anxiety levels, and even personality disorders, weight loss can improve your overall perspective and quality of life. It can also lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar levels if you have type 2 diabetes, lower cholesterol and triglycerides levels, and reduce pain in weight bearing joints. In addition, losing weight can increase your energy, improve your self image and appearance, and help you live a longer, healthier life.

For those currently struggling with their weight, we are here to help. If you’re happy with your weight, keep in mind prevention is the best treatment for obesity. You can achieve your goals and we’ll be here to help you every step of the way!

What is Obesity?

Obesity is the accumulation of excess or abnormal body fat that has the potential to lead to additional weight-related health problems. Obesity is officially determined by the BMI (Body Mass Index) rating of each individual. The BMI is calculated using the height and weight of the patient (BMI = kg/m²). For adults, a BMI of 18.5-24.9 is average, 25-29.9 is overweight, and 30 or higher is considered obese.

Obesity has 3 classifications:
Obese, Class I: >30 – >35
Obese, Class II: >35 – >40
Obese, Class III: >40

Obesity is a chronic, relapsing, multi-factorial, neurobehavioral disease. We want to help you choose a weight loss plan that’s based on how much weight you need/want to lose.

Seca® Medical Body Composition Analysis

This device takes a deeper look at your weight from the inside out. When you step on a scale and your weight has changed, what really has changed? Body fat? Muscle? Water? Measuring your body composition allows you to get a better picture of changes in your weight.

This non-invasive assessment takes less than 20 seconds to analyze your body fat%, muscle mass, visceral fat and your body’s fluid levels. We use this to help us develop a plan for your food and exercise that will maximize your results. The results can also help understand the real health benefits even if your weight stays the same.

New Direction Weight Loss System

Our weight loss program is based on the New Direction Weight Loss System full or partial meal replacement plan, and is closely supervised by our supportive and motivating weight loss team of healthcare professionals right here at Helendale. The program is easy to follow and offers rapid results.

The New Direction Weight Loss System teaches you how to cope with and control your thoughts and feelings concerning food. It also helps you replace old, harmful habits with new healthy habits that last a lifetime. This program fully supports your desire to lose weight safely yet quickly, and helps you reach your long-term weight maintenance goals.

The food replacement provides all the necessary nutrition adults need on a daily basis. The exercise portion of the program offers a safe, effective, and consistent workout. The system prompts rapid yet safe weight loss and includes thorough education. The goal isn’t to keep patients on meal replacements, but to establish healthy eating habits that endure well beyond the completion of the program.

Meal Plan Phases

The New Direction Weight Loss System includes four stages for lifelong success.

The screening stage is a pre-program comprehensive medical evaluation that determines which meal plan is right for you. Dr. Conley conducts a medical exam that includes blood tests and an EKG, a diet readiness questionnaire, and a SECA Body Composition Analysis. The Body Analysis helps us determine fat free mass, skeletal muscle mass, total body water, and visceral fat. During this phase, we inquire about past dieting, eating habits, lifestyle patterns that can affect weight gain/loss, and any previous weight loss programs that weren’t the right fit. We then introduce the New Direction System, review nutrition information, and educate about weight loss.

Reducing Phase

Reducing Phase

The reducing phase includes a VLCD (Very Low Calorie Diet), which allows less than 800k calories a day, or a LCD (Low Calorie Diet), which allows 800-1500k calories/day. During this phase, patients who want to lose 40 lbs. or more use the New Direction protein-rich full meal replacements or modified meal replacements for all their daily nutrition for a limited time (about 8 wks.). These meal supplements are delicious, nutritionally-complete, and low on carbohydrates. This meal replacement system supports rapid but safe weight loss, averaging a loss of *3-5 pounds a week. If patients struggle with this phase, we offer less stringent but just as effective alternatives.

For patients who want to lose 15-20 lbs, we recommend partial meal replacements, or LCD. Two to three meal replacements a day are coupled with nutritious grocery items. Average weekly weight loss is *2-3 pounds.

Our team closely monitors all patients at their weekly check-ups. Dr. Conley, a registered nurse, and our certified personal trainer work together to supervise the process and make dietary prescription changes when necessary. Weekly support groups offer education in nutrition, exercise, and personal effectiveness. Our personal trainer teaches patients how to develop and implement a structured exercise regime within their own home. The duration of the Reducing Phase depends on the desired amount of weight loss.

*Results will vary.

Adapting Phase

Adapting Phase

The adapting phase begins when patients are within 5-10 pounds of their goal weight. They continue to receive medical monitoring from Dr. Conley and staff, and gradually return to regular protein-rich grocery foods and prepared meals. This stage allows you to practice healthy eating habits as you lose your last few pounds. If you’re looking for easy, already-prepared, perfectly proportioned nutritious food options, we encourage patients to take advantage of our partnership with Edibles Restaurant for meal pick-ups.

Clients are still encouraged to participate with the weekly education and support classes. Most patients spend 5-10 weeks adapting to regular healthy eating habits. We provide strong encouragement and accountability to incorporate new understanding of nutrition and exercise into everyday lifestyle.

Sustaining Phase

Sustaining Phase

The sustaining phase, or maintenance phase, is the most important on-going transition to a healthy, happy lifestyle. Weight maintenance is the key to long-term health, fitness, quality of life, and improved health. Once our patients reach a normal, healthy weight, they need to actively strive to maintain that weight. We continue to support healthy eating habits and enhance exercise routines to help maintain the new weight. Patients should continue to attend weekly education and support classes and meet with healthcare providers as-needed. It’s time to reap the rewards of your efforts and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
