Spider Veins, similar in appearance to bruises, are merely enlarged blood vessels that appear most frequently on the legs. A common condition, spider veins result from multiple factors, such as hormone changes, inherited genetics, and activity levels. Although harmless, spider veins appear unsightly and can be removed with Sclerotherapy.
Sclerotherapy safely eliminates unsightly spider veins. We inject a substance, hypertonic saline (concentrated salt water), into your spider veins. You might feel a mild stinging sensation, but it goes away shortly. The injection hardens the tissues of the blood vessel, which irritates the lining of the vein. Your body absorbs these vessels in the next few months. You might notice a reaction that looks like hives, but it clears quickly. We like to give patients 1-3 treatments, depending on the amount and size of veins.
What Happens After my Appointment?
The targeted area might be red and itchy for the first day. You’ll notice bruising around your blood vessel, and in some cases those bruises get worse before they get better, but they clear up after a few weeks. You’ll see the blood vessels lighten and disappear after 6 weeks.
During the healing process, avoid sun exposure as much as possible; the sun can make the healing process longer and form dark areas around the injection site. You also need to avoid strenuous activity for about 2 weeks so your veins won’t open back up.
We combine Sclerotherapy with our laser treatment procedure if you have veins that are too small for injection.
