About Microneedling at Helendale with Shannon Joy

Micro-needling with PRP can lessen the results of hyper-pigmentation, hypo-pigmentation, traumatic scars, acne scars, and stretch marks. With micro-needling, you’ll see fine lines, wrinkles, and scars slowly fade away over the next six months. Your skin will look and feel continually younger and healthier as it continues to produce collagen. Soon after your treatment, you’ll notice a fresh new glow to your skin.

What is Microneedling with PRP?

We use PRP treatments in conjunction with micro-needling to maximize results. A PRP treatment uses the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which contains natural healing agents, to stimulate skin repair. Micro-needling is a minimally-invasive, non-surgical, non-ablative procedure that creates controlled injuries to the skin to allow fresh blood supply and a deep penetration of the PRP. Using Micro-needling with PRP encourages regrowth of damaged skin cells.

What Can I Expect From Microneedling with PRP?

First, we begin by collecting the PRP. We take a small vial of blood from the patient’s arm (less than what’s normally used for a typical blood test). We send the blood through a specialized system that concentrates the blood platelets and provides platelet-rich plasma (which has the appearance and consistency of honey). This PRP is applied to the targeted area.

We then continue with micro-needling with a medical device that creates controlled impressions in the skin. Micro-needling can be used for most parts of the body, such as the face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, abdomen, head, back, and scalp. The skin responds to the controlled injuries by producing collagen and elastin, both natural healing agents. The procedure happens so quickly that you don’t feel much pain; you’ll feel a sensation similar to light sandpaper brushing your skin. Topical hydrating gels, creams, and serums are applied to the micro-channels to ease any discomfort.

The procedure lasts about half an hour, depending on the size of the target area, and the entire appointment takes approximately one hour. We recommend a series of 4-6 treatments every 6-8 weeks. If you have a severe condition, such as advanced wrinkles and aging, extremely visible marks, or deep acne scars, we recommend 7-8 treatments with 6 week intervals.

Recommended Pretreatment Instructions

  • Avoid Accutane for the 6 months leading up to your appointment.
  • Three days before the treatment, avoid retinoids, topical antibiotics, exfoliants, hydroquinone, sunburn, and benzoyl peroxide
  • For best results, we recommend pre-conditioning your skin for the 4-6 weeks leading up to your appointment
  • Avoid IPL or laser treatments during the 7 days leading up to your appointment.
  • Do not use waxing, hair removal creams, or electrolysis 5-7 days before your appointment
  • Do not use any creams that may increase the sensitivity of your skin (topical retinoid or hydroquinone products), nor any that promote dryness or exfoliation
  • Do not shave the day of your appointment
  • Make sure the area doesn’t have a sunburn, excessive dryness, or a new breakout
  • Your skin must be clean without any lotion, oil, makeup, deodorant, powder, perfume or sunblock

What Happens After a Microneedling Treatment? Aftercare Instructions

After the procedure, your physician may apply sunblock and moisturizer to the area. Patients may experience some redness and sensitivity in the targeted area, which can last as little as 24 hours but may take up to 4 days to clear. Most patients do not experience any downtime.

Aftercare instructions include:

  • Wait at least 4 hours after your appointment; then you may treat skin gently with a soft cleanser and pat dry
  • Do not take an anti-inflammatory medication such as Advil, ibuprofen, or Motrin. These drugs will prevent the natural inflammatory process that helps your skin to respond to the rejuvenating procedure. Tylenol is ok to use to help with any soreness
  • Avoid sun exposure for at least 3 days and 10 days if possible. Always use at least SPF 30 if you are in the sun and reapply every 2 hours
  • Your skin may start peeling after 3-5 days, but don’t pick it; apply moisturizers daily.
  • Eating fresh pineapple can help the healing process
  • Micro-needling opens your pores, so try to avoid excessive sweating and rigorous exercise
  • You may use mineral-based makeup 24 hours after your appointment

Are Their Any Side Effects to Microneedling with PRP?

Some patients experience some redness and tenderness, but it doesn’t typically last long. If you experience excessive discomfort from burning, redness, and swelling, use cool compresses.

Not everyone qualifies as a candidate for PRP. The state of the skin and blood disease might exclude patients from receiving the treatment. We also need to be aware of all prescription medications and supplements that you’re taking. All skin types or skin colors are candidates.
