I have thin lines starting across my forehead. Any proactive suggestions to keep them from getting worse?

Monday September 26, 2011 7:29 Char
7:30
Hi Char- the best thing for lines on the forehead is botox. Sometimes just a little, small number of units, can do wonders! Products and fillers don’t really help with these as they are lines of movement.

Would like to know if there are any non-surgical treatments for facial firming. Specifically, under the chin and around the mouth and jawline. I’m in my late 40′s and these areas are starting to droop a little. Thanks!

Monday September 26, 2011 7:31 Wanda Zimmerman
7:32
Facial firming can be divided into different aspects. First;y, products and lasers can help the skin iself be firmer. Obviously they don’t “lift the skin”. Here’s where sometimes fillers or collagen stimulators can help lift the skin.

Is it recommended for a woman with rosaeca to get a peel?

Monday September 26, 2011 7:33 Ellen
7:35
Rosacea usually can handle most peels. I wouldn’t want to see someone with “out of control” rosacea get a peel however. Glycolics need to start slow with rosacea patients.

What type of non invasive treatments are available for treating the lines that around the lips and how often does the procedure need to be done?

Monday September 26, 2011 7:35 Filomena
7:36
If the lines are shorter, then sometimes a filler like Juvederm or Restylane can be put along the “red line” of the lip. This generally doesn’t change the volume or size of the lip, just re-establishes the line. If the lines are longer, than usually we recommend the DOT or fractionated CO2 laser.

sometimes some of the antiaging products I use help with the wrinkles, etc. but they clog my pores, what is up with that and what product would you recommend.

Monday September 26, 2011 7:37 Lynn
7:38
well, they are probably just too thick! glycolic acis and topical vitamin A’s, as well as many topical vitamin C’s all come in formulations that shouldn’t break you out. sometimes whiteheads or milia are actually a sign of collagen breakdown.

Can you talk a little about VelaShape? Does it really get rid of cellulite? How long does it last? Does it hurt?

Monday September 26, 2011 7:39 Laurie
7:41
velashape is a laser/radiofrequency machine along wiht heavy massage. yes, it does get rid of cellulite…unfortunately it’s not permanent. everyone needs different treatments. it’s very warm. i would say it doesnt hurt, but it’s not “relaxing”-it’s a treatment.

What can be done about redefining the lip line so it’s more visible. I’m not interested in making my lips fuller; it seems as though the lip line can fade with time and I’d like to define it better so it looks natural.

Monday September 26, 2011 7:41 Wanda
7:43
as i said, a little filer such as retylane or juvederm can redfine that “red line” of the lip without changing the volume or making it any bigger. it’s a great procedure that really makes you feel good about your lips!

Monday September 26, 2011 7:43 Char

glycolic acid is a great product. it chemically exfoliates the skin, making the cells behave better, plus it turns on collagen cells and makes pigment cells behave better!

Monday September 26, 2011 7:44 Wanda Zimmerman
7:46
simple things. aveeno shave gel is great for men. a lot of guys like the jack black line. we don;t carry a specific men’s line-but honestly most lines are fairly non- sexist. they really are meant for both women and men.

Is it true that if you have fillers and are very active sports, aerobics etc. the fillers won’t last as long? I heard that some where.

Monday September 26, 2011 7:47 Maryann Alaimo-Allen
7:50
fillers last differntly in everyone. we have general time frames that we expect in the average person. i would say that smokers have the shortest lasting fillers as well as tanners. thin people i think can use up filler faster also. if a filler doesn;t last the way we want it to, we usually try a differnt one. i would say that people who exercise a lot may or may not have their filler disappear faster!

Monday September 26, 2011 7:50 Guest
7:51
like i told maryann..everyone’s different. we know that the more you do fillers, the less you need them. there’s a benefit to layering or adding to them. over the years, my fillers have lasted longer and longer.

fillers can be used around the mouth-sometimes~ we try not to chase the small lines around the corners of the mouth…but marionette lines and the commas that we get can all be softened.

What type of collagen stimulators can help to firm the skin? Are they injections?

Monday September 26, 2011 7:53 Wanda
7:55
it can be an injection like sculptra, which is a series of treatments. or it can be topical such as laser peels or products. obviously the injections achieve a differnent goal than the topicals. does that make sense?

What skin reaction can you expect after an inject-able? Could you return to work without having any swelling?

Monday September 26, 2011 7:55 Filomena
7:56
most injections can cause bruising. we always want someone to plan on that. the swelling that you have is more noticeable to you as a patient than anyone else. often patients like the “swollen” feeling…it feels tighter!

when do you use fillers and when do you use botox? what are fillers made from

Monday September 26, 2011 7:57 vicky
7:59
we use fillers to replace volume…i’ll use the analgy of a grape vs. a raison…we all want to be a grape. botox is for lines of motion…so if the line is caused by a scowl…u stop the scowl-the line goes away.

I ahve heard of a procedure called EMatrix ablation resurfacing with radiowave frequency for photo rejuvenation. Is this process done by the MD only or can it be done by the RN, NP or esthetician? Also, how many treatments are recommended?

Monday September 26, 2011 8:00 Martie
8:02
the ematrix is done by jill the NP at the practice and some of the esthiticians, depending on areas. yes. we use radiofrequency to tighten the skin and lift. i’ve had my face done. it’s amazing the change. like the vela, it’s hot…so not relaxing. but very effective!

Is a laser peel different from a vitalize peel in regards to the benefits of each one? Can laser peels be done to help wrinkles (specifically the eleven lines) as well as firming? If so, what type of laser peel would one get and how many to achieve the desired result? Is there down-time to a laser peel?

Monday September 26, 2011 8:03 Wanda
8:07
laser peels are different from a vitalize. the DOT laser is a fractionated CO2 laser and is the most powerful tool that we have to resurface the skin. after that comes the differnt chemical peels, including a vitalize. a vitalize peels combines some differnent peels along with topical retinoic acid (retinA). the “11″ lines need to usually be diminished with botox. resurfacing won’t get rid of the lines of motion. the DOT laser has a down time of 5-7 days (you look like a sunnburn).

Monday September 26, 2011 8:07 Maryann Alaimo-Allen
8:09
the hyaluronic acid fillers are natural as is radiesse. allergies are unheard of since these products exist naturally within us. each filler has it’s +/-’s that we take into account when we discuss what needs/wants to be done. so yes, bruising and some mild swelling

Is the glycolic acid in the peel or is there a topical product that you suggest?

Monday September 26, 2011 8:10 Filomena

glycolic acid can be in a peel or a home product. i’m a firm believer that you need a good home regimin. there’s no sense doing peels etc if you dont support the collagen cells at home.

is EMatrix a laser peel? As mentioned previously, in an earlier response, that an EMatrix will tighten and lift the skin.

Monday September 26, 2011 8:11 Wanda
8:14
it’s not technically a “laser peel” because it really doesn;t change the way the skin looks. we generally can only lift or tighten with radiofrquency. we can get some lift with the DOT CO2 laser and we certainly get tightening. we can greatly improve on the texture of someones skin with the co2 laser, whereas with radiofrquency we need to do some other things if the actual skin needs help. the analogy of a face lift with bad skin. everything neds to be addressed
